6 Ways to Connect to Your Inner Resources

We all have an innate capacity to guide, soothe, and ground ourselves. Our bodies and nervous systems are built for it. One thing I love about the therapy process is that it usually brings an abundance of your individual strengths and resources up to the surface. Connecting to our inner resources and strengths is incredibly valuable in developing a sense of well-being and empowerment.

When we are struggling or overwhelmed, our resources can get obfuscated. If you’re having difficulty connecting to your inner resources, I invite you to try the following:

  1. Tune into Nervous System Shifts

Get to know your body. Notice when you are shifting into a place of hyperarousal (heightened nervous energy) or hypoarousal (immobilization, depression, or a “freeze” response). What shifts you into a place of calm and well being? Perhaps it’s a soothing song, 4 deep breaths, or feeling your feet on the ground. When you feel yourself coming back into a place of groundedness, notice what got you there--that’s an inner resource!

  2. Connect to Inner Wisdom

See what it’s like to practice stillness and mindfulness with the intention of connecting to your inner wisdom. Consider what it feels like in your body when you are connected to your inner wisdom. Experiment with making decisions by listening to your innate wisdom rather than external influences. Read this to get ideas on how to connect to your intuition.

  3. Experience Joy, Peace, Freedom, etc.

Build joyful memories and recall those memories when you need to increase feelings of joy. Memories can be powerful resources. Imagine a time you were at peace, and all the imagery that goes along with that memory. Notice any shifts in your body, breath, or feelings that take place.

  4. Practice Yoga

Intentional embodiment practices can help us align with our intuition, strengths, and internal sources of comfort. Restorative yoga practices allow you to spend time in a relaxed state, strengthening your body’s ability to calm and regulate.

  5. Spend time in Soothing Thoughts and Sensations

Intentions or affirmations can remind you of your resources. “I am calm and resilient”, or “I can connect to my inner sense of peace and joy today” are a few examples.

  6. Counseling

We’re big fans. Therapy is all about building your resources, and sometimes your counselor may be able to see your strengths and resources when you’re not able. See more about how to schedule a session with one of our counselors.
