What to Expect When Starting Therapy

It is the beginning of a new decade and many of us are reflecting on the past, setting intentions, and creating goals for the year ahead. Goals are traditionally centered around self-care, maybe in the form of financial or physical resolutions. But what about emotional or mental well-being? If you have considered therapy in the past, even for a minute, maybe it is time to add it to the top of the list of things to try in 2020. At Dallas Healing House, we believe that everyone can benefit from good quality therapy. As you may have seen in previous blog posts (So You’re in Therapy: Now What? and Why We Convince Ourselves that We Don’t Need Therapy), we explore the topic of the therapy process often. We also enjoy challenging myths and beliefs surrounding therapy.

So, what does it look like to start therapy at Dallas Healing House? We love to keep the experience simple! Our therapists work hard to create a safe and informative process from the very beginning. Our website includes information about each therapist, rates, modalities, and a FAQ page. Potential clients are welcome to submit through the website or contact their chosen therapist directly. When a submission comes in, it is given to the requested or most appropriate therapist. That therapist then initiates the first point of contact. Phone consultations are scheduled so that potential clients and therapist alike have time to ask questions and share information. If the phone conversation feels like a good fit, an intake session is scheduled. In the initial session, your counselor will gather more information, identify goals for treatment, and discuss frequency and scheduling. In the following sessions, we continue to form the therapeutic relationship.

Our Uptown Dallas space is thoughtfully laid out to create a calming and comfortable environment. The unique building was actually a home at one point and feels welcoming to our clients and therapists!

We understand that the process of finding a therapist can be daunting so we try our best to answer questions and support each potential client as they explore the world of therapy.
